Tongue thrust is a dysfunctional reflex where the tongue thrusts forward towards the teeth during swallowing. This is often related to tongue tie (tethered oral tissues), but can also occur as compensation for orofacial dysfunctions. Tongue thrust can potentially lead to teeth shifting, and can even create an open bite, where the teeth no longer come together during a normal bite. It can disrupt proper digestion, as food is often not swallowed in a functional way, and can even induce increased gas or bloating from swallowing air during eating.
OMT can help reroute the neuromuscular connections, and help retrain the tongue to support a healthy swallow.
